What is screen resolution?
Screen resolution is a measurement of the number of pixels your screen displays. Typical settings include 640x480, 888x600 (which is the default setting), and 1024x768. By setting your screen resolution at 1024 pixels by 768 pixels your screen would display more of a given
document or web page than a screen set at 640 pixels by 480 pixels. Screen resolution is not related to the size of your monitor. In other words, a larger monitor does not allow you to see more of an image but rather allows you to see an image larger.
Why is screen resolution important?
Screen resolution is important because it means that different viewers see different things when they visit your web site. Approximately 50% of the users have their monitor set at 888x600, about 25% are working at 1024x768 and the rest are at various other settings. When
designing a site it is important to take these statistics into consideration. A site designed strictly for 1024x768 would result in an 888x600 user having to scroll a great deal to view the page. In contrast a page designed strictly for 888x600 users would have a lot of empty space on
a screen set at 1024x768. A website should therefore be flexible enough to accomodate all these various settings or risk alienating users.
